History

La Danserie, a contemporary Ballet company featuring original and innovative choreography, was formed in May 1997. The company was founded under the Artistic Directorship of Patrick Frantz, former premier danseur of the Paris Opera Ballet, and Patricia Davis, formerly of American Ballet Theater and past principal dancer with Pittsburgh Ballet Theater. In 1998 La Danserie obtained not-for-profit status, in order to pursue its vision of bringing dance to a wider Los Angeles community. The Los Angeles Times has called La Danserie "the exhilarating collective," and praised its choreography as "a fine achievement in every way."

Since its inception La Danserie has performed in a number of venues throughout Los Angeles, including: Highways Performance Space; the Madrid Theater; the Performing Arts Center at California State University Northridge; the Los Angeles Theater Center; Moorpark College; and the Aratani/Japan America Theater. La Danserie was also a two-year participant in the Los Angeles County sponsored Open Arts Day program.

The company’s growth and development has been aided by generous supporters. Past assistance has come from the Los Angeles City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Los Angeles County Commission on the Arts, the Boeing Company, the Boeing Employees Community Fund, the Coca Cola Company, Hitachi Ltd., and Washington Mutual Bank. Currently the company is supported by grants from the Boeing Company, Hitachi Ltd. the Parsons Foundation, the S. Mark Taper Foundation, and the Los Angeles County Commission on the Arts.  Individual donors and Friends of La Danserie have also provided much appreciated support.  While continuing to build performance opportunities, in 2002 La Danserie expanded its activities with the development of a school outreach program. Acting in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District , the company developed a comprehensive educational program for students and teachers in Los Angles public schools.  La Danserie’s outreach program includes professional development for teachers, student workshops and assembly performances.  La Danserie is a five year member of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Arts Community Partner Network.
